Five Key Outdoor Living Trends for 2021 (and beyond)February 17, 2021
At Design Warehouse we believe that outdoor living and entertaining are essential to modern life. With travel still off the cards this year for many of us, we think that creating the perfect al fresco living space for you, your friends and loved ones to feel comfortable in and enjoy makes for a more than perfect substitute.
With this in mind, we’ve broken down some of the key trends in outdoor living for 2021 and beyond, so you can start building your dream space at home.
Form and Function
It doesn’t matter how much time, effort and money you put into your outdoor living area if your chosen furniture is just plain uncomfortable. We love a beautiful looking object as much as the next person, but if you and guests aren’t able to enjoy your stylish set up with ease and comfort then you have a problem. Potentially a pricey one at that!
This is where the trend of more ergonomic outdoor furniture design comes to the rescue. Often, patio and poolside furniture can feel stiff and awkward because designers prioritise the likes of all weather-hardiness and a design-heavy look over support and feel. Our ergonomic outdoor styles most definitely meet the style brief, and are also designed to cocoon and cradle the body. It goes without saying that they are built to admirably stand up to whatever New Zealand’s inclement weather throws at them, too.
Low maintenance, low stress
Make life a little easier by opting for a low maintenance, easy care patio area. The idea is to keep it minimal so you can spend more time relaxing, and less time tending plants and cleaning and prepping furniture. Whether you lean towards the lush comfort of luxe boho style or are a proud minimalist, what you need to focus on is creating somewhere comfortable to lounge and some sturdy, low maintenance plants to complete the look. Most native plants need little attention if positioned in the right soil and sun orientation, and there are plenty of easy-care exotics available too. Rather than using lots of little pots, make life easier by replacing them with a few big planters – your patio will look less cluttered, too.
Blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living with a beautifully curated outdoor space that flows effortlessly straight out from your interior. Dress your space with comfortable but chic day beds, outdoor rugs, colourful cushions and, of course, lots of plants. As ever, the key to a successful outdoor area is to think about how you want the space to work for you, and if it will also be home to perhaps a yoga session or work from home space when the weather allows.
Global design influences
A frustrated traveler’s paradise, the global influence trend is one that looks to distant lands for inspiration. Capture the global atmosphere with earthy tones and lots of natural wood, as well as accent pieces like side tables or poufs that have a rustic, organic feel. If your ideal travel inspiration is pool or beachside, cocoon chair are perfect for beach-inspired relaxing. Sun loungers are also a great way to dial up the luxury on your staycation, and we have styles to fit every aesthetic.
Our gardens, patios and other outdoor living spaces have never been used for entertaining as much as they were over last year. Consequently, trends for 2021 include outdoor furniture that meets our new needs. Stylish larger sets with multiple seating options, clever tables that multitask depending on your needs, and hidden storage or chiller units are all features that are being included more and more. As the weather cools a firepit if also a must – a super-stylish way to create a focal point, while also providing light and warmth in the evening.
